The Spanish government confirmed on Wednesday March 18th 2020 that it would be temporarily suspending the portability of fixed and mobile numbers, as part of efforts to reduce the operational burden on its major network carriers amid the novel coronavirus outbreak in the country.
The announcement comes a day after Spain’s largest telecommunications providers — Telefonica, Orange, Vodafone, Masmovil and Euskaltel — issued a joint statement calling for rational and responsible use of telecommunications networks, as the COVID-19 outbreak in the country leads to heavy network traffic. The statement cited increases of close to 40% on IP traffic, 50% in mobile voice traffic, and 25% in data.
In light of this news, Telnyx will be unable to process porting requests for Spanish phone numbers until further notice.
