Losing a customer is painful. Losing one you already won is worse. Three years ago, that was becoming routine at BluStream: sales would close a brand, the team would begin onboarding, and then everything would stall because they couldn't get phone numbers approved.
"We started to lose clients during our onboarding process, which was devastating as a small company," said Michael Gordon, Co-Founder and VP of Product at BluStream. "To put all this effort into sales and then lose them right before they're supposed to turn on."
The timing couldn't have been worse. The SMS industry was going through significant upheaval in the phone number approval process, and BluStream's stack, built on AWS Pinpoint and SNS, had no answers.
"We were mostly happy with them at the time," Gordon said. "But when we couldn't get phone numbers anymore, their support system couldn't help us, our account executive couldn't help us, their expensive business tier couldn't help us."
The team evaluated a range of phone number providers and ran a quick proof of concept with Telnyx. "You had competitive pricing, you were able to get phone numbers quickly, and your support team was incredibly transparent and helpful," Gordon said. "It was a really easy decision from there."
BluStream had already built a multi-tenant, multi-channel system, so easy integration was non-negotiable. The team handed the Telnyx documentation and product specs to its developers, who had inbound and outbound messaging running through the SDK within a day or two.
"Telnyx's SDK was super easy," Gordon said. A proof of concept cleared BluStream's QA system within a couple of days, and the team knew it had the right tool. Number applications went in through Telnyx, and a few weeks later, BluStream's customers were up and running.
BluStream is a B2B2C conversational AI platform built around a gap most brands never fill: what happens after the box arrives.
"When a consumer buys a physical good, the next touchpoint they often have is a negative support call or a marketing email," Gordon said. "Brands unfortunately leave their consumers high and dry there, which creates significant churn. You don't get to that second sale, and worse, you might get negative reviews that start to affect other parts of your business."
BluStream steps in with conversational AI journeys that guide consumers through their first 30 and 90 days of ownership and onward to loyalty. Interactive SMS is its most successful channel, and Telnyx is the backbone, powering two-way messaging and delivery analytics across the platform.
For a retention platform, the clearest measure of a supplier is how fast it gets clients live. On that count, the numbers speak plainly.
"Telnyx has taken our onboarding process from four to six weeks, typically, down to one week on average for getting a phone number and a client set up," Gordon said.
The relationship has deepened from there. BluStream has extended its integration through the SDK over time, and the success has the team eyeing AI agents as the next Telnyx product to adopt.
The support that won BluStream over hasn't faded since the proof of concept. A few weeks ago, one of BluStream's customers was running on a large e-commerce platform whose native SMS opt-in wasn't compliant, leaving BluStream stuck: it couldn't change the platform, but it still needed a phone number approved.
"We messaged support, and a day later we got on a call with Kevin Coleman and Jonathan Graubard," Gordon said. "They immediately understood our problem, they were great listeners, and they gave us not one solution but three that we could follow up on, unsticking all of those clients of ours. It was really fantastic."
That responsiveness has become the pattern. "Anytime something changes in the phone number application process, or we have a question about the SDK, your support team has been there in a heartbeat to give us the advice we need to pass on to our clients," Gordon said. "Basically, you make us better, you make our clients happier, and that makes us happy."
Three years in, Gordon's case for Telnyx starts with the obvious and lands somewhere more fundamental.
"I can say the normal stuff: your product is phenomenal, your uptime is phenomenal, and your cost is competitive," he said. "But for us, what really made a difference, and I think applies to other B2B and B2B2C companies, is that the quality of your downstream supplier significantly affects the customers you have today. If you can't depend on your downstream suppliers, or they have opaque processes, you're in a lot of trouble when things go wrong. Telnyx has been the exact opposite of that."
