The problem that ended UpLync's relationship with its last upstream carrier was as basic as telecom gets. There were calling exchanges its traffic could not reliably dial in and out of, and phone numbers it could not obtain in the markets its customers needed. For a company whose entire product is the phone line, coverage gaps meant the product itself was failing.
"Telnyx just had a better footprint at that time, and now it's pretty much universal," said Michael Bristol, Founder and CEO of UpLync Communications. He moved the company's voice traffic to Telnyx well over a decade ago. It has not moved since.
Ten years with one upstream carrier is close to an eternity in telecom. Coverage closed the deal, and what made it look better every year afterward was the company on the other end of it. Telnyx was still small then, and so was UpLync, and the fit showed.
"We definitely got more attention and one-on-one assistance when we really, really needed it," Bristol said. "That was the motivation behind switching to Telnyx, and we haven't done anything since."
UpLync's focus explains why the stakes were what they were. Bristol got his start running a dial-up internet company in rural Missouri, learning the phone industry from the inside by delivering the internet over its lines. When he saw internet-based phones coming for the copper and the PBX box in the office closet, he pivoted, and UpLync became a hosted VoIP provider for small businesses across Indiana, Missouri, and Michigan. It is a lane the company chose on purpose and has stayed in as it has grown, and nearly all of it rides on Telnyx SIP trunking.
"I say exclusively, but 98 percent of our backend is Telnyx based," Bristol said. "We dabble around in other places just for some specific use cases. But Telnyx runs everything on our voice stack."
A hosted VoIP customer never sees the upstream carrier. When the phones work, UpLync gets the credit, and when they do not, UpLync gets the call. The company also sells without long-term contracts, which means every customer is one bad month from shopping around. In that business, uptime is the retention strategy.
"Over the ten or twelve year period that it's been, there have only been one or two periods of pain that I would describe," Bristol said. "Other than that, wow. Phenomenal uptime, phenomenal success in being able to deliver a good product to our customer. It's not broken, so we're not going to fix it."
The record has hardened into something the market now associates with UpLync itself. "We have a really good reputation for rock solid uptime, and that's in no small part because Telnyx is our backend," Bristol said.
The growth has been the quiet kind, a line that kept rising for a decade without a single dramatic year. Bristol described roughly 18 to 20 times the revenue over that stretch, the sort of compounding that never makes headlines. He keeps hard figures to himself and is just as deliberate about where the credit goes.
"It's been because of our reputation, and Telnyx has been a key player in that," he said. "You can slice and dice that to whatever metric you want, but we're about 20 times as big as we were ten years ago."
"Telnyx is a big machine. Telnyx has grown a lot too," Bristol said. What has not changed in a decade is where an escalation lands when the normal channels run out: with a person whose name he knows.
"There have been a few key folks at Telnyx who have always been kind of the Supermen at Telnyx that can put their cape on," he said. "Mark Morse has been phenomenal. I've worked with Mark since the very beginning, and I was really pleased to see that he's now the director of support."
It is the same standard UpLync holds itself to. Small business customers get systems and process, right up until process is not enough. "When it hits the fan, we want to come in and take care of them," Bristol said. "We get the same kind of experience with Telnyx. If the tier one and tier two tech support folks can't really help us out, we know there are other people that we can get on the phone, and we'll figure it out. That collaboration makes us very comfortable, and that's the biggest reason why I would recommend any business like ours to use Telnyx."
UpLync built its reputation on a voice stack that stays up. If your business rides on your carrier's reliability, the same SIP trunking and phone numbers UpLync runs on are available to you.
