Both calling plans and Direct Routing enable Microsoft Teams users to make calls to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) from Microsoft Teams.
Microsoft Teams Calling Plans are easy add-ons from the Teams environment and can be spun up quickly. However, the quality of these calls is usually poorer than cell calls, as Microsoft does not have direct connectivity to the PSTN. Depending on the size of your organization, Calling Plans can be highly cost prohibitive due to multiple carrier and aggregator fees.
Direct Routing allows organizations to use a dedicated communications provider to power the telephony behind their Microsoft Teams accounts. This gives Teams users direct access to the PSTN, which results in higher quality calling at a lower cost when compared with built-in calling plans.
