How to call the Dominican Republic from the US

The Dominican Republic is the most visited Caribbean destination in the world, a thriving tourist economy that welcomes millions of American visitors each year. Beyond tourism, the DR hosts a significant manufacturing sector (particularly textiles and medical devices), a growing technology and BPO industry centered in Santo Domingo, and one of the Western Hemisphere's largest diaspora communities in the United States — concentrated in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Florida. This means millions of Americans have regular reasons to call the Dominican Republic, from personal family calls to business and logistics coordination.

Like the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic is part of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), which simplifies the dialing experience for U.S. callers significantly.

Guide to calling the Dominican Republic

Before dialing, ensure you're aware of the rates charged by your carrier for international calls to the Dominican Republic. You should also make sure your connection is reliable to avoid any issues caused by latency or choppy voice transmission.

1. Check the time in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic observes Atlantic Standard Time (AST) year-round, which is UTC-4. Unlike the U.S. East Coast, the DR does not observe Daylight Saving Time:

  • Eastern Time (ET): DR is 1 hour ahead of ET in winter; same time during EDT summer
  • Central Time (CT): DR is 2 hours ahead (1 hour during CDT)
  • Mountain Time (MT): DR is 3 hours ahead (2 hours during MDT)
  • Pacific Time (PT): DR is 4 hours ahead (3 hours during PDT)

East Coast callers will find the minimal time difference makes scheduling easy, especially during U.S. summer when both zones align.

2. Dial the exit code

Because the Dominican Republic is part of the NANP, you can dial it like a domestic U.S. call: 1 + area code + local number. The 011 exit code is not required (though it will work).

3. Enter the Dominican Republic's country code

The Dominican Republic's country code is +1, with multiple area codes:

  • 809: The original, island-wide area code
  • 829: Overlay area code introduced in 2005
  • 849: Second overlay area code introduced in 2009

All three area codes are active and serve the same geographic area.

4. Dial the area code and local number

The Dominican Republic uses the NANP format: 1-809/829/849-XXX-XXXX.

For a landline

Dominican landlines can use any of the three area codes (809, 829, or 849). To call a landline with number 809-555-1234, dial: 1-809-555-1234.

For a mobile phone

Mobile phones also use 809, 829, or 849 area codes with no distinction from landlines in the NANP format. To call a mobile 829-432-5678, dial: 1-829-432-5678.

Tips for a successful call

1. All three area codes reach the same island. Don't be confused by having three area codes (809, 829, 849) — they all serve the Dominican Republic and can be dialed identically.

2. Check international rates despite the familiar format. Like the Bahamas, calls to the DR are billed as international calls by most U.S. carriers even though they use the 1+ format. Verify your plan's international rates or use a cost-transparent provider like Telnyx.

3. Dominican business culture is relationship-oriented. Personal rapport and trust are foundational to doing business in the Dominican Republic. Don't skip pleasantries on calls — a warm opening and some small talk before business topics are both expected and appreciated.

4. Consider WhatsApp for everyday communication. WhatsApp is ubiquitous in the Dominican Republic. For routine check-ins or when a call doesn't connect, WhatsApp messages and voice notes are the go-to solution for most residents.
